With a new generation of multicultural authors such as Tomi Adeyami, Ibi Zoboi, and Elizabeth Acevedo, we are seeing more and more multicultural female protagonists enter the YA scene. Not only do these protagonists look, think, and act more like our diverse student population, they also usher in a new type of feminism and mysticism. This session will include book talks for a few of these titles and a brief discussion of the themes and motifs that are creating a new pattern in their genre. We'll create a crowd-sourced book list of additional titles to that match the themes and motifs we discuss and discuss implications for the next iteration of multiculturalism in YA.
